General Information About Peru

Location: Peru is a country in western South America. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Extension: With 1,285,216 km². , Peru is the third largest country in South America, after Brazil and Argentina.

Population: 28 220 764 inhabitants

Capital: Lima

Language: Spanish and quechua are the two official languages.
83,9 % of Peruvians speak Spanish, 13,2 %, in Quechuan, and 1,8% in Aymara indian . As part of its cultural wealth, Peru has a multitude of languages. Quechua is the most important native language and it is spoken in most cities in the andes. Aymara is spoken in some areas of Puno.  In the Amazon a multitude of indigenous dialects are spoken.

Religion: 81,3 % of the population is catholic and 12,5 % is evangelical; while 3,3 % are of other religions, and 2,9 % of no religion.

Important Cities: Lima, Arequipa, Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura, Iquitos, Cusco, Chimbote, Huancayo, Tacna, Ica, Juliaca.

Form of government: Republic

Currency: The official currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol (S/.). There are bills for the amounts of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 nuevos soles. As well as coins of 1, 2, 5 nuevos soles, and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents.
